Monterey is a gorgeous seaside town on the Central Coast of California and was home for a night on our USA #vanlife road trip earlier this year. Famous for it's Aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, Jazz Festival, and more recently for its various location features on the HBO program Big Little Lies, it's a must visit for everyone's list.
“It is the hour of pearl—the interval between day and night when time stops and examines itself.”
WALK THE SCENIC COASTLINE
The first thing we noticed is how picturesque this place was! The coastline here is in parts craggy rocks alongside hardy and colourful wildflowers and part sandy patches of beach full of happy seals and playful sea otters. The wide paths in most places and almost right the way around the shore make for long and incredibly scenic walks or bike or buggy rides. It's a feast for your eyes and camera and changes with each bends in the bay.
AN EVENING ON CANNERY ROW
It's hard to miss the hive of activity on charming Cannery Row. Eat, drink, shop, stay and play on this historically famous street complete with Aquarium, unique architecture and fascinating culture. We bought souvenirs, gifts, and candy, did a delicious wine-tasting and met some lovely locals with Carmel Ridge Winery, and ate all the seafood enjoying the sunset at the Fish Hopper restaurant.
DRIVE BY THE HISTORIC HOMES
This is something I want to do again but with more time and more daylight to get out and take proper pictures. The historic homes and buildings such as cathedrals, missions and halls range from stunning Spanish style to colourful gabled Victorians, contemporary waterfront luxury to haunting Colonial memories of past. There are several tours and the people at the Pacific Grove Information Centre could not be more knowledgeable and helpful!
Those are seals lying on the beach - pupping! Hilarious and beautiful to watch, albeit behind a fence to protect them and not scare them. Plus check out those rock formations...so stunning.
Sampling some very tasty wine whilst meeting the locals - including buying the most delicious Girl Scout cookies ever and petting the cutest dogs ever - all at one bar in one tasting room!
The grey day lit up the blue of the sea, the carpet of purple wildflowers (in the background), and the colourful waterfront homesteads, whilst the breeze gave us much missed salty skin.
